A MAN believed to be aged in his 30s has been found dead in a house following a fight in a street in Melbourne's west.

Police were called to the house in Felicity Dr, Tarneit, just before 11pm after neighbours reported a brawl between two men that had spilled from the house onto the street.

A 35-year-old man who lives at the property has been arrested and is assisting police with their inquires.

A female aged in her 20s who stays at the address is also assisting police.

The victim, who is Victorian, did not live in the house.

Detective Sergeant Mark Hatt said the altercation was "obviously violent given that someone is deceased".

"We're still piecing together the investigation, a post-mortem will be conducted later today."

Neighbour Kristie Peel said it was a shock to have someone die next door.

"My friend was here and she said she heard two big yells, like a pained yell not a cry for help and that set my dogs off barking," Ms Peel said.

"It is really scary to find out what has gone on in the neighbourhood. It is pretty shocking, it's only two doors down."

The Homicide Squad is investigating.

More to come ...

POLICE near Mount Everest are investigating reports of a fight on the upper reaches of the world's highest mountain between two foreign climbers and their Nepalese guides, officials said.

"We were told our clients and the guides fought on their way to camp three. We don't have all the details yet, but our clients have come down off the peak," said Anish Gupta of Cho-Oyu Trekking, the Kathmandu-based company that organised the expedition.

He said that one of the clients, a Swiss national, had descended the mountain and was currently waiting for a flight back to Kathmandu.

The other client, an Italian, remained at Everest Base Camp and may still try to summit the 8848-metre peak.

Sitaram Karki, the chief district officer in Solukhumbu, the region where Everest stands, said the police were conducting an investigation, but the details were still unclear.

"There are communication issues high on the mountain, but we have received the reports of a fight and deployed our team to investigate the incident," Mr Karki said.

More than 3000 people have climbed Everest, which straddles Nepal and China, since it was first conquered by New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese guide Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Every year hundreds more set out in April to attempt the climb.

Defiant Rudd to fight for Gillard

PM Julia Gillard says she doesn't need a bad Newspoll to tell her that Labor had an appalling week.

FORMER prime minister Kevin Rudd has taken the extraordinary step of writing to his own branch members to distance himself from the botched leadership coup instigated in his name and urged them to support Julia Gillard.

The Griffith MP also warned his local members that Labor would face a battle to hold his electorate - the party's safest in Queensland.

The move comes as some within Labor continue to call for Mr Rudd to retire at the next election, despite his insistence that he plans to recontest his seat.

In the letter sent to about 800 ALP members in Griffith, Mr Rudd said the events leading up to last week's aborted ballot "were not of my choosing" and were "difficult" for everyone in Labor.

He defended his decision not to contest the ballot based on his previous vow not to challenge Ms Gillard and restated his intention to campaign with the prime minister before the September 14 election. Mr Rudd also warned he could lose his seat, which he holds with an 8.5 per cent margin.

"The real task ahead is to hold Griffith for the Labor Party and to prevent Tony Abbott from walking into the Lodge on September 15," Mr Rudd wrote. "That will require all of our energies locally and nationally."

The letter was written just before the latest Newspoll found Labor's primary vote had collapsed to 30 per cent and Ms Gillard's personal approval rating plummeted to a 19-month low.

SUPPORTER: Kevin Rudd is throwing his weight behind his boss Julia Gillard.

Ms Gillard blamed the poll slump on the leadership turmoil.

"I don't think anybody in the country needed an opinion poll to tell them that last week Labor had a truly appalling week," she said.
