POLICE closed Bay St in Port Melbourne last night after an incident involving an armed man.
The man sat in the middle of the road in an apparent stand-off with police and the Critical Incident Response Team.
It is unknown whether shots were fired.
Bay St was closed for several blocks as police told onlookers to stand back at least 200m because the man had a gun.
Police also closed surrounding streets.
Patrons at a nearby hotel said they did not know the man or if he had been drinking their earlier.
Police spokesman Adam West said the man was threatening self-harm but the situation had been ''resolved peacefully''.
The man is now in custody.
