LIKE any ancient site, this tiny oasis in the middle of a Chinese desert was starting to show its age and faced being relegated to the pages of history.

But thanks to a strong tourist trade and government intervention, the popular Yueyaquan Crescent Lake will remain on the bucket list in travel guide books for some time to come.

The incredible attraction was starting to shrink due to increasing desertification until the government stepped in and started to fill it.

The tiny desert oasis, which was formerly a silk route hub and centre for trade between China and the West, relies heavily on tourism and features a number of historic sites dating back to the Han Dynasty.

The 218m long lake, which is made up entirely of fresh water in the shape of a half moon, is located 6km from the city of Dunhuang, and is one of a number of sites under threat from desertification in China.
