Donation trap kept from Scott Driscoll

MORETON Bay Mayor Allan Sutherland did not trust his political ally and Redcliffe MP Scott Driscoll to keep secret a "trap" for his political rival Chris Whiting, warning the plot must be kept from him.

In a secretly recorded conversation obtained by The Courier-Mail, the Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor warns the campaign trick must be kept quiet in case Mr Driscoll let the scheme out of the bag.

"The other reason I didn't want Scott here is because I didn't want him going bang, bang, bang around the place," Cr Sutherland says during the April 12 meeting last year.

Plot: Driscoll, mayor share political hot water

He states that the trap - which involved key financial supporter and developer David Trask electronically lodging a $1000 donation into his political opponent's campaign account - was going to "start a war . . . like you'll never believe".

"The real kicker in this, firstly, it's a juicy story," he says.

In the same conversation, Cr Sutherland warns that "we must be very, very careful how we manage it so it doesn't come back and bite me on the arse".

Cr Sutherland and Mr Driscoll had teamed up on the mayor's re-election campaign, including on "push polling".

Cr Sutherland yesterday denied he was involved in setting-up Mr Whiting, saying the donation only came to his attention after it was paid to Mr Whiting.

David Trask told The Courier-Mail the first discussion he had about the donation with Cr Sutherland was after a complaint to the council's chief executive.
