Killer whales surf behind dive boat

An Orca pod of killer whales jumped, behind a boat off the coast of La Paz, Mexico

A POD of killer whales put on an incredible show for a couple celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary, surfing behind their boat off the coast of Mexico.

About 17 - 20 Orca whales crashed and jumped through the waves behind Laura Howard's boat, delighting her and husband Rich.

"I kept thinking, 'These magnificent, intelligent creatures are having as much fun as I am'," Mrs Howard told the Toronto Star.

"It’s the first time I’d seen an Orca in the wild."

The couple, from Lutz, Florida, are both keen scuba divers and photographers. There were on one of six boats in a dive group travelling off the coast of La Paz, but the whales were only chasing the fastest boat, which they were on.

The footage was taken in 2011 but they had only shown family and close friends up until now.

"They were spinning, jumping," Mrs Howard told WFLA.com.

"One of them really stuck with us the longest and would flip on their side and literally look up at me."

The couple were initially angry that their dive had been cut short, but said the experience more than made up for it.

"It was amazing to see them because they were 6-8 inches off the back of the boat. Every time they'd come up for a breath of air, they'd spray you," Mr Howard said.
