IF YOU'VE ever struggled to close your wife's suitcase before a holiday, the latest research on holiday costs will come as little surprise.

Women are adding more than a third to the initial cost of their holidays by splashing out on new clothes, researchers found, with many saying they do it only so they look different in their holiday photos from previous breaks.

They spend an average of £245 ($376) on clothing, accessories and toiletries for a holiday abroad, according to a survey by travel agent sunshine.co.uk. This compares with an average outlay of £710 ($1090) for flights and accommodation.

The women surveyed revealed that the £245 was typically spent on four pieces of swimwear, six summer dresses and five holiday tops/vests; three pairs of sandals/holiday shoes, two pairs of shorts and three pieces of holiday jewellery; sunglasses, beach bag and sun lotion; and three items of makeup.

When asked why they had bought new items instead of using what they had in their wardrobe, 21 per cent admitted it was so they did not look the same in their holiday photos as on previous trips. A third of women said they bought new items every time they went away.

Sunshine website co-founder Chris Clarkson said: "I think it's easy to forget about other costs involved in going on holiday on top of the flight and accommodation.

"My advice would be for people to really take a look at the clothes and accessories they already have, because there's no need to buy new items each time."
