A MAN was killed in front of two mates when he was pinned by a gate in Melbourne's east.

The car hobbyists were leaving the industrial premises on Clipsal Drive, Bayswater North, at about 8.30pm when a mechanical sliding gate fell from its track.

The 500kg steel gate landed on one of the men, a Croydon man in his early 30s, pinning him against a vehicle.

Emergency workers tried to revive the man but he died at the scene.

The man’s friends, believed to be a Ringwood East man, 55, and a 44-year-old Donvale man, were not injured.

Police and WorkSafe investigators are at the scene and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
