CARNIVAL Cruise Lines will today announce that it is bringing a second ship to Australia to meet the burgeoning consumer demand for cruise holidays.
The Carnival Legend will sail seasonally out of Sydney to the South Pacific from September 24 in what is a major vote of confidence in the Australian cruise industry by the world's biggest cruising company.
The Legend is the sister ship to Carnival Spirit which has carried more than 100,000 passengers since coming to Australia last October. The hugely successful Spirit was the first ship Carnival has ever home ported outside America.
"We are all really excited about Carnival Legend joining her sister ship Carnival Spirit in Australia," Jennifer Vandekreeke, Director Carnival Cruise Lines Australia and New Zealand, said.
"There is a great fit between the Australian personality and Carnival Cruise Lines, both being playful, outgoing and fun-loving. The tens of thousands of Aussies who have already travelled on Carnival Spirit tell us they love the quality of our dining, entertainment, activities on offer for families and couples, comfort of our staterooms, and of course the exceptional service provided by our crew - and we can now offer this to even more guests with the arrival of Carnival Legend.
"As sister to Carnival Spirit, Carnival Legend will offer the same wide spaces, an abundance of stateroom options such as balconies and interconnecting rooms and an unparalleled variety of activities.
The Legend, built in 2002, has capacity for 2680 guests in its 1062 cabins. It was upgraded in 2011 to include the popular adults only Serenity deck and will undergo a further upgrade so that it meets the expectations of Australian passengers.
"Carnival Legend will go into dry dock in 2014 where she will receive a range of upgrades to ensure she's perfectly suited for the tastes of the Aussie market. We will be using our valuable learnings from the first year of Carnival Spirit's deployment to decide on the best features and enhancements for Australians."
Passengers will be able to start bookings in June.
