Charges over Kangaroo Point stabbing

A MAN has been charged with attempted murder after the stabbing and assault of a woman and two other people in inner Brisbane yesterday.

Emergency services rushed to a unit block at River Tce, Kangaroo Point, about 5.10am where it is alleged a man forced his way into a unit and argued with the 27-year-old female occupant.

Police will claim the man then punched the woman several times before stabbing her with an unknown weapon.

She was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital with multiple stab wounds in a serious but stable condition

Another man and woman were also assaulted and were treated at the scene for minor bruising.

The 39-year-old man has also been charged with enter dwelling with intent, grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm and three counts of serious assault on a police officer.

He is will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Charges over train rant

A woman charged over a racist rant on a Melbourne train is on a waiting list for rehabilitation, a court heard.

A WOMAN charged over an alleged late-night racist tirade on a train, which made national headlines, is waiting on a place in a rehabilitation centre before she makes a plea.

Peta Nugent, 38, was charged in Melbourne Magistrates' Court yesterday with two counts of profane and obscene language and behaving in a riotous manner while on a Metro train between Parliament and North Melbourne train stations on April 10.

A further hearing has been scheduled.

A bail condition restricts Ms Nugent from being within 50m of metropolitan train stations and she will argue for the condition to be relaxed as she seeks placement in a rehabilitation program, the court heard.

Defence lawyer Vanda Hamilton said Ms Nugent was expected to plead guilty soon, but a delay might be caused if she was in rehab and needed access to trains.

Charges over ABC Learning collapse

A FORMER chief financial officer of ABC Learning Centres has faced criminal charges relating to the collapsed childcare chain.

James Black, the former CFO, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning on three charges following an investigation by the corporate watchdog.

Documents filed in court show the Australian Securities and Investments Commission has alleged he made available, or authorised or permitted, the presentation of false or misleading material to an auditor about matters affecting ABC in February 2007.

Mr Black, dressed in a dark suit, was granted bail this morning. He did not enter a plea and declined to comment outside court.

ASIC, in a statement, said it had alleged Mr Black "gave - or authorised the giving of - three engagement letters between three ABC-related companies and ABC Acquisitions Pty Ltd".

"The letters related to the purchase of three overseas companies by ABC in December 2006."

"Specifically, each letter contained false or misleading information about the terms of commission payments that Acquisitions was to receive."

ABC Learning, was a stock market darling which once ran 2300 centres across four countries. It collapsed in November 2008.

ABC Acquisitions was a separate entity not owned by ABC Learning.

Bayley pleads not guilty to 12 charges

ADRIAN Ernest Bayley has pleaded not guilty to 12 charges relating to alleged sex offences in the St Kilda area.

Bayley, 41, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court via video link today.

He verbally pleaded "not guilty" as Magistrate Gerard Lethbridge read out the charges to him.

Bayley has been charged with five counts of rape, three of false imprisonment and intentionally causing injury and a single count of making a threat to kill.

Bayley is accused of carrying out sex offences in the St Kilda area, dating back to 2000.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He forewent his right to a committal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and will appear for a directions hearing in the County Court on May 21, when a trial date will be set.

Priest on 57 child sex charges

A CATHOLIC priest charged with of indecent treatment of children in southeast Queensland schools in the 1970s and 80s has had his court case adjourned this morning.

The 77-year-old man has been charged with 57 counts of indecent treatment of children and one count of common assault.

Detectives from the Child and Sexual Crimes Unit of the State Crime Operations Command charged the Boronia Heights man in February following an investigation into alleged indecent treatment of children between 1977 and 1988.

The offences were allegedly committed in Brisbane, Logan and Gold Coast schools.

His matter was mentioned in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The matter has been adjourned until May 13 for a committal mention.

Bailey faces two new Jill rape charges

The man accused of murdering and raping Jill Meagher has been charged with two new offences.

THE man accused of killing Jill Meagher is also accused of raping the Irish-born ABC employee three times, Melbourne Magistrates' Court has been told.

Accused man Adrian Ernest Bayley's barrister Helen Spowart aired the revelation during an application to adjourn her client's up-coming committal hearing which is expected to start next Tuesday.

Mr Bayley, who appeared in court via video link this morning, is now facing one count of murder and three counts of rape.

Ms Meagher's husband, Tom, was in court flanked by Homicide Squad detectives today, and left court without comment following proceedings.

Ms Spowart told Magistrate Felicity Broughton that the defence wanted the committal hearing in relation to the Meagher case to be adjourned off for four weeks.

Ms Broughton refused the application, saying she was satisfied the defence had enough time to make relevant inquiries.

The committal is listed for two days.

Six witnesses are expected to be called.

Reasons for the request centered around a request for notes made by a police forensics scientist in relation to DNA.

Ms Spowart said Mr Bayley was seeking his own expert's report about the DNA analysis.

The court heard a separate police scientist had analysed damaged clothing, and Mr Bayley was seeking an independent textile expert to analyze that evidence.

Ms Spowart said there was other extra material that the defence needed to digest to determine if it would have an impact on the committal hearing.

Chief Crown prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, vigorously opposed the application to adjourn next week's preliminary hearing, saying the scientific police officers would be available to be cross examined at the committal.

He said the other extra material referred to would have no bearing on such a hearing.

Ms Broughton is considering the submissions.

In late January, police charged Mr Bayley, 41, with seven new sex-related charges linked to an attack on a woman in Elwood in November 2000.

Those charges were three counts of rape, two of intentionally causing injury and single counts of making a threat to kill and unlawful imprisonment.

This week, Mr Bayley was charged with offences relating to two separate alleged attacks.

He was charged with rape, intentionally causing injury and false imprisonment over an alleged attack on a woman in Elwood on April 5 last year.

He was also charged with rape and false imprisonment regarding a further alleged assault on a woman in Balaclava on July 15.
