Enjoy good weather, storms coming

MAKE the most of today's sunshine and clear skies as forecasters are predicting afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms in the state's south-east from tomorrow.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michelle Berry said isolated showers are expected around coastal areas from Tuesday with the chance of thunderstorms developing north of Brisbane on Wednesday and Thursday.

"There's a 20 to 30 per cent for thunder in Brisbane as well," she said.

"We have a moist onshore wind flow in line with a bit of instability provided by an upper level trough moving over the south-east on Wednesday and Thursday."

Ms Berry said showers are also expected in the central district, southern interior and north of the state with warm conditions to continue in western Queensland and temperatures to remain in the 30s.

"We're going to see some showers and storms through the central district extending through the southern interior.

"There will also be showers up through the tropics.

"These will be fairly widespread over Wednesday in particular with some strong winds developing.

"They will be extending up from St Lawrence to the Torres Strait from late tomorrow."

Ms Berry said the weather will remain mostly fine in Brisbane today with a possible shower or two expected in the afternoon.

Fog, storms as autumn weather gets weird

FOG this morning, storms this afternoon - that's the weather mix for the southeast today.

Thunderstorms have been predicted to sweep across the southeast this afternoon.

With cloud clustering during the day, the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted isolated thunderstorms would hit parts of the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.

While temperatures will hover between 25 and 27 for the rest of the day, fresh southwest to southeast winds will pick up on the Sunshine Coast and grow into strong gusts during the afternoon thunderstorms.

Gold Coast can also expect strong gusty winds for the afternoon and a few showers in the late morning.

This morning, Brisbane woke to fog clouding the city and reduced visibility led to traffic warnings on the Pacific Motorway.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matthew Bass said some areas around the inner western suburbs and over the city were down to 100m visibility.

"Down the southern suburbs overnight we've had a reasonable amount of low level moisture with light winds and a weak ridge creating a little fog."

Brisbane city, Ipswich and Amberley is experiencing 100m visibility while at Archerfield visibility is sitting at 1km.

Motorists have been warned of fog on the Pacific Motorway at Loganholme.

"Getting into the later parts of autumn and winter we will see more fogs around Brisbane," Mr Bass said.

What to expect from the weekend weather

SOUTHEAST Queensland could be in for strong gusts, large swells and patchy showers as the trough slides down from the north.

The Bureau of Meteorology said windy bouts and rainfall is expected to worsen throughout the weekend because of the low-pressure system, currently off the coast of Townsville.

“We are expecting a few showers today and cloudy conditions on and off but that should increase tonight and tomorrow closer to the coast (as the low tracks) down the coast,” forecaster Pradeep Singh said.

“(The system) is almost parallel to the coast and travelling southwards quite quickly.”

About 50mm to 80mm of rain is expected to fall between tonight until Sunday morning, he added.

Temperatures will hover in the low to mid 20s.

“We’re expecting a strong wind warning for coastal waters later today, which should generate high waves and swells...so that could be a bit nasty along the coastal areas,” he said.

“It will then start to clear up and by Monday it is looking like a much better day with a bit of sun,” he said.

Wild weather whips the state

A SEVERE thunderstorm is expected to hit Melbourne later today as gale force winds cross Victoria.

A severe storm warning for western Victoria has been issued, and the same weather system is expected to hit Melbourne in the next couple of hours.

The SES confirmed it has received more than 105 calls for help across the Melbourne metropolitan area and expects demand to increase.

One driver is being checked by paramedics after a tree crushed his car in Kilmore during high wind gusts.

A woman called for help after a tree fell on her vehicle in Kew, bringing down live power lines on the ground around the car.

She was told not to leave the vehicle for fear she could be electrocuted. Firefighters, SES and ambulance officers were on the scene to safely remove her from the car.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Stuart Coombs said conditions would worsen.

"We are seeing it right across southern and mountain areas of the state we are expecting winds which will be gusting to around 90 to 100km/h,'' Mr Coombs said.

"Mt Buller has already had gusts over 100km/h in the last five minutes and it is going to get worse.''

St Kilda has so far recorded a top gust of 100km/h.

Tullamarine reached a top of 94km/h with other suburbs had winds between 70km/h and 90km/h.

Spokesman Toby Borella warned people to prepare for the strong winds.

"We are asking people to check loose items around the home, securing trampolines and things outside and park their cars undercover away from trees," he said.
