Man uses taxi as getaway car for robbery

A MAN has been charged with armed robbery thanks to the cabbie he hailed as a getaway driver.

A 19-year-old man allegedly accosted a woman who was delivering pamphlets to houses along Paradise St at Highgate Hill about 7pm Wednesday.

It is alleged the man demanded the woman’s phone and threatened her with a rock when the 29-year-old refused to comply.

The man fled on foot after the woman handed over a small sum of cash from her wallet.

Two men who responded to the woman’s screams for help chased the alleged thief down the street, but did not catch him.

Police were called to the scene and were approached by a taxi driver in his car as they conducted their preliminary investigations.

Police said the cabbie told them he had been hailed by a “suspicious” man and asked to drop him off at a nearby address.

Police arrested the man a short time later.

The man from Bundaberg is expected to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning for one count of armed robbery.
