VIRGIN Australia has opened the doors to a new 300-seater airport lounge it says has "transformed the Canberra travel experience".

The 1082 square metre lounge, designed by renowned architect Tim Greer of Tonkin Zulaikha Geer Architects, occupies the west wing of Canberra's domestic terminal.

The snazzy-looking lounge includes fancy Marblo bars, natural stone flooring and leather chairs, the airline said.

There's light refreshments on offer and a menu designed by Australian chef Luke Mangan for passengers to feast on while they soak up sweeping views across the tarmac.

And of course there's the free wi-fi, power PC, printer, newspapers and magazines, and of course a television that will show the latest from Foxtel.

Virgin Australia Chief Executive Officer John Borghetti said the enhancements herald a new standard of travel in the nation’s capital.

"Canberra is an important hub for corporate, government and leisure travellers and we now offer a premium end-to-end travel experience that not only encapsulates Virgin Australia’s distinct look and feel but also our high standard of service," Mr Borghetti said.

"For the first time in over a decade Australians will have a choice when it comes to competition in business class travel in and out of the capital."

There will be more check-in counters, leather seating in departure lounges, additional passenger screening areas and baggage carousels within the new terminal space.

The airline also unveiled enhancements in the air including a new business class section on its refurbished Embraer fleet, which it claims flies between Sydney an Canberra in 23 minutes.

IF YOU'RE after a room with a view, the new JW Marriott Marquis Dubai won't disappoint.

The luxury hotel opened for business today and, at 355m, the elevator ride itself will be an adventure.

It's officially the world's tallest hotel, as verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. It took the title from its neighbour, the 333m Rose Tower.

The city's famous Burj Khalifa tower – the world's tallest man-made structure – is much higher at 830m, but the JW Marriott Marquis is the tallest building dedicated entirely to a hotel.

The hotel, which is owned by the Emirates Group, spans 72 storeys and occupies two towers, and only the first is open. The second is expected to open next year.

The towers each have 804 rooms, nine restaurants, five bars, lounges, two ballrooms, a spa and health club.

There's also a 30m swimming pool on the seventh floor and the Vault Lounge, on the 71st and 72nd floors, has panoramic views of the city.

Rooms rates start at $319 and each tower has presidential suites, 506 king rooms, 22 executive king rooms, 156 twin rooms, 118 corner suits, four rooms for disabled travellers.

It's the first Marquis brand of JW Marriott to be built outside the US.

"Dubai is an important destination for Marriott International as one of the world's most exciting cities offering world-class facilities and infrastructure, central location in the region and future growth potential," said Marriott International president and chief executive officer Arne Sorenson, who was in Dubai for the grand opening.
