EVERYONE knows that mums know best.

And Jack Riewoldt's mum reckons the star Richmond forward is being true to himself on the footy field regardless of recent criticism.

The Tigers goalkicker was labelled a "prima donna" by Carlton triple premiership forward Mark Maclure and condemned by commentators for poor body language and petulance in recent weeks.

But mum Lesley yesterday defended her famous son.

"Jack and I are very, very similar so we wear our hearts on our sleeves and we say what we think," she said.

"We clash as we are required but you cannot knock someone who just goes and gets it.

"You just can't do it."

Asked how he was feeling after a week of criticism, Riewoldt said: "A lot better than last week. I had an interesting week last week, which was a bit of fun."

The oldest of three boys, Riewoldt yesterday took his mum to the Gold 104.3 Mother's Day lunch and gave her a gift to open on Sunday, when she is at home in Hobart while he returns to Melbourne from Richmond's clash against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.
