SHARP-eyed customs officials have seized 85 knives set to be sold on Melbourne's streets in an inspection of a passenger's luggage at Melbourne Airport.

Single-handed opening knives, gravity opening knives, credit card size knives, folding safety knives and trench knives were among the haul found in the luggage of a 30-year-old Chinese man when he arrived from Hong Kong.

The man allegedly planned to sell the knives and could face charges, the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service said.

People convicted of importing knives without a permit can face up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $425,000.
