Push to rebrand East Richmond

A COUNCIL is trying to change the name of East Richmond station.

City of Yarra councillor Phillip Vlahogiannis wants it to be called Cremorne - after the small suburb in which it's located.

Cremorne, bounded by the Yarra River, Punt Rd, Swan and Church streets, was part of Richmond until 1999.

Cr Vlahogiannis said that East Richmond station was originally called Swan St station and was later re-named because it was east of Richmond station.

"The establishment of Cremorne as a suburb ... affords the opportunity to align the name of East Richmond Station with its location within the suburb, as well as to pay tribute to the history of the area," he said in a motion.

Yarra Council backed his plan tonight and has asked its staff to take its case to the Department of Transport.

Cr Vlahogiannis said that re-naming stations was not uncommon, with Museum Station becoming Melbourne Central and Spencer Street Station going to Southern Cross in recent times.

A station called Cremorne once existed in Richmond near the Rosella factory.
