Veterans feel sting of car park bungle

SERVICEMEN and women were among a group of drivers slugged with exorbitant fees courtesy of a bungle at an inner-city car park.

They and other attendees at the city service were hit with peak hour Monday to Friday fees by automated parking machines upon exiting the unmanned Myer Centre car park.

Only an hour earlier, all had driven past a sign at the entry boom gates outlining public holiday and night rates.

The Courier-Mail is aware of one driver who was charged $30 for their 1.5 hour visit.

The maximum rate for Monday to Friday parking is $49.

The advertised public holiday $15 capped fee was bearable but few were prepared for the fees that appeared on automated ticket machines when it was time to leave.

One serviceman had tried different ticket machines in the carpark in an attempt to find one that was charging appropriately but gave up and paid the full fee.

Many were left frustrated by the lack of help available in the unstaffed carpark following the service.

The assistance button at the exit point went unanswered by drivers seeking answers.

A call to the carpark later in the morning was answered by a staff member who declined to comment, but said the malfunction had been corrected.

The Courier-Mail is awaiting a return call from the carpark's operator regarding refunds for those affected.
