THINKING of a stopover on your way to Europe this summer? Some destinations offer better value than others. Here's the cost break down.

If you take your stopover in Bangkok, you're going to save a lot more money than if you travel via Dubai or Singapore.

Hotels.com have checked the average hotel price for stopover cities for Australian travellers heading to Europe. The results are surprising. And will certainly get you thinking about different ways to travel.

Bangkok, Beijing and Guangzhou all offer five-star accommodation for $200 per night. That's the same as the average price of average hotel accommodation in Dubai or Singapore.

Here's the list of the top 10 stopover destinations by price. The average hotel prices were chosen by country in 2012 compared with 2011. All prices are in Australian dollars.

1. Bangkok, Thailand $92
2. Guangzhou, China $112
3. Beijing, China $112
4. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia $119
5. Abu Dhabi, UAE $155
6. Tokyo, Japan $162
7. Seoul, Korea $163
8. Dubai, UAE $192
9. Hong Kong, China $198
10. Changi, Singapore $217*

The good news is that flights via the cheapest hotel destination cities are also cheaper.  Think of all extra money you will have to spend in Europe when you do get there.
