Mum stops abduction attempt

A MOTHER witnessed a stranger trying to abduct her four-year-old child in a Melbourne supermarket.

The 25-year-old woman was shopping with her three children at the Safeway supermarket on Thompsons Rd, Cranbourne about 5pm on Wednesday when she saw the stranger speaking to her kids.

The woman argued that one of the children belonged to her when the mother approached her.

A short time later the mother witnessed the woman pick up her youngest child who had been walking in the toy aisle.

She immediately confronted the woman, causing her to let go of her child and flee the supermarket.

"The children are obviously upset but particularly the mother is also quite upset," Detective Leading Senior Constable Chris Russo said.

"This type of thing seldom happens but when it does it’s probably one of the most confronting and scary things that a parent can ever face."

Police said the incident was not captured on CCTV.

Detectives from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public assistance.

The woman police wish to speak to is described as being about 170cm tall with a thin build and dark hair.

She was wearing a pink jumper and dark pants.
