Man concealed drugs on flight to Brisbane

QUEENSLAND police have arrested 49 people on 140 charges in an operation targeting a high level drug trafficking network with interstate links.

It is alleged the group had been transported drugs into Cairns and Brisbane from New South Wales and distributing them throughout far north Queensland.

Charges include trafficking, supply and possession of methylamphetaine, MDMA and cocaine.

On Tuesday, police searched businesses and homes in Trinity Park, White Rock, Townsville, Edmonton, Brinsmead and Manoora in North Queensland as part of Operation Kilo Saltbush, seizing drugs, mobile phones and equipment, and arresting four men.

A 43-year-old Trinity Park man, a 23-year-old White rock man, a Manoora man and a 24-year-old Brinsmead man were charged with various offences.

On Monday, a man alleged to have about two kilograms of MDMA concealed on his body was intercepted by detectives and the Australian Federal Police in Brisbane after he arrived on a flight from Sydney.

Homes in Griffin, Wonga and Cairns were also raided by police who seized cash, drugs, and property and charged seven men.

Steroids and false identification were found when police searched two residential units in Edge Hill, Cairns, seizing a luxury vehicle, mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, hard drives, USB devices, and documents and arresting a 52-year-old man.

At a Griffin address, north of Brisbane, drugs and cash were seized as well as identification, drugs and drug equipment at a Wonga address, north of Cairns.

A 55-year-old man was arrested and charged following the raid.

A 36-year-old man was charged with one count of trafficking and dangerous drugs after police found drugs believed to be methylamphetamine, cocaine and steroids as well as electronic scales, mobile phones and documentation at a Cairns residence.

In a further four raids in Cairns, three men aged 27, 25 and 39 were each charged with trafficking dangerous drugs and a 34-year-old man with possessing dangerous drugs.

All are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court in the coming weeks.

Operation Kilo Saltbush began last year and involved Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, police from the Organised Crime Group and Far Northern Region Drug Squad.
