GILLIAN Donath loves penguin-sitting.
Ms Donath, 64, is a volunteer carer for AWARE (Australian Wildlife Assistance Rescue and Education) Wildlife Rescue.
Her latest charges were two penguins that came into her Frankston-based shelter while another animal carer took an Easter break.
One of the rescued penguins had an eye injury, the other needed a safe place to grow back feathers while moulting.
"Penguins are pretty special to look after for a change," Ms Donath said.
"They have a lot of character and can be surprisingly cheeky, with one slightly bossy and the other good at begging for food."
Ms Donath said it was often difficult to get away for a holiday.
"I can have up to 60 animals at one time, as you never know what animals you're going to have in, it's not easy to go off in a hurry," she said.
