MORE than 2000 passengers have tested out Sydney's newest port after disembarking their cruise ship at White Bay this morning.

P&O ship Pacific Pearl docked at the new cruise terminal just before 7am.

It returned to Sydney after a 9-night cruise around to New Caledonia and the pacific islands.

Passenger Harry Capobianco said the whole process was "smooth as silk" for his family of four.

"It was done very well, too easy," he said.

"It was a relaxing holiday and we were glad there were no dramas coming off."

Roads and Ports Minister Duncan Gay said the new $57 million terminal was an important milestone for the states infrastructure.

"We are just coming to the close of what has been another record Sydney cruise season with 265 ship visits and we have already taken more than 280 bookings for next season," Mr Gay said.

"Given the unprecedented growth in cruise, this new terminal is very timely indeed. Its vast arrivals and departures hall is designed to cater for 2400 passengers at a time."

Mr Gay said the terminal access road would minimise traffic disruption on roads around Balmain and Rozelle, a win for locals.
