A GAS leak at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre has forced the cancellation of morning surgeries.

Patients from first level surgery unit have been evacuated after the leak was detected in the sterilisation department – located in the hospital's theatre suite - about 8.30am.

Hospital spokeswoman Emma Liepa said no patients were being allowed back into the building until the cause of the leak had been found.

Nine cases were scheduled for this morning.

The MFB arrived about 9.45am to investigate the leak, but patients and staff who were also inside other areas of the hospital have been allowed to remain there.
