Zane weakens to tropical low

TROPICAL Cyclone Zane has been downgraded to a tropical low overnight as it moves towards Queensland's Cape York.

The cyclone had threatened to bring winds of up to 200km/h but by 7pm yesterday it had been downgraded to a category one.

About 4am today, it was further downgraded to a tropical low and is now 160km east of Lockhart River.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Pradeep Singh said strong wind warnings were still current from Cape Grenville to Cooktown.

"It deteriorated very quickly overnight," he said.

"It will continue as a trough system across the gulf but it's nothing too significant now."

The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled a cyclone warning for coastal areas of Cape York between Mapoon and Coen about 3am.

Queensland's fourth cyclone of the season has weakened to a tropical low pressure system.
