Fisherman rescued in shark-infested river

A 62-YEAR-OLD fisherman was rescued from Mackay's Pioneer River overnight after his tinny struck an anchored boat and capsized in bull shark-infested waters.

Police say the man was about 40m from the southern bank of the river and 500m east of the Forgan Bridge when his vessel struck a boat with no navigation lights about 11.30pm.

The boat had been salvaged from the river after it sunk about a month ago.

When the man's 4.3m tinny capsized, a fishing lure also lodged itself in his left leg.

His cries for help were heard by a couple on a yacht 50m away who helped police rescue the man using the tender of the salvaged boat.

"No one was getting in the water because there are bull sharks," duty sergeant Darren Nolan said.

The man was taken to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment and police have advised Maritime Safety Queensland of the incident.
