The Soviet aircraft hanger with a twist

German resort

ON the outside this former Soviet Aircraft hangar looks like a ski resort. Tourists pull their bags through the snow wearing jackets, long pants and possibly even thermal underwear. But once inside their world is transformed.

Inside the tourists strip down to their swimwear. There is soft light, azure blue water and the shadows of the rainforest. The air temperature is 26 degrees, humidity 40-60 per cent and the water temperature varies from 28 to 32 degrees.

It's called Tropical Island resort and it's in Germany, just off the A13 Berlin/Dresden motorway, approximately 35 km south of Berlin Schönefeld airport.

The aircraft hangar is 360 metres long, 210 metres wide and 107 metres high.  It is so big the Statue of Liberty could stand inside it, the Eiffel Tower could lie across it and eight football fields could fit inside the grounds (66,000 metres squared). The hall itself reaches high enough to swallow the skyline of Berlin‘s famous Potsdamer Platz.

The hangar was originally designed to protect large airships from the elements. It was purchased by the current owners for $22.6 million in 2003.

Inside there are seven different spa zones each themed on a different tropical region of the world from Thailand to India and Africa. If you get hungry there are 13 different bars and restaurants to choose from. There's a beach, rainforest, lagoon, a golf course, waterslides and 200 hotel rooms and lodges. There's even tropical animals and a hot air balloon ride - inside.

It will set you back $44.50 for entry to the Tropical Island alone. Children under five are free. Anything else - waterslides, overnight stays and food will cost extra.

Take a look inside this weird German world.
