TWO African-American passengers have filed a lawsuit against US Airways, claiming they were told they had to ditch their hoodies and jeans to be allowed into first class.

Brothers Miles and MacCraig Warren have filed a lawsuit over the "humiliating" incident, which occurred while they were flying from Denver to Los Angeles. They are claiming discrimination and emotional distress.

According to the lawsuit the brothers were stopped at the gate and told to wear more appropriate attire as they were violating an alleged first-class dress rule. MacCraig was told to remove his hat and Miles was told to change into a button-up shirt, nicer shoes and pants.

"They were told that this was the policy if you wanted to ride in first class," lawyer Rodney Diggs told the New York Daily News.

The men obeyed and changed their clothing, but were shocked to watch white passengers boarded wearing the same attire – jeans and hoodies.

"They were very upset when they saw the other two gentlemen sitting right across from them," Diggs said. "This is definitely racial discrimination and a violation of their civil rights."

They were travelling first-class via a discounted "buddy pass" after getting their tickets through a family friend who's an employee of the airline.

Todd Lehmacher, a spokesperson for US Airways, told the New York Daily News that the company is currently reviewing the complaint.

“We welcome customers of all ethnicities and backgrounds and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. We take these allegations seriously.”

news.com.au has contacted the airline for further details.
