Woman run over by car in RACV blunder

AN elderly woman suffered serious injuries to her leg, head and chest after being run over by her own car in an RACV roadside assistance call-out blunder.

Police, WorkSafe and RACV are investigating the incident, which happened in Melbourne’s east.

The woman, believed to be in her 60s, is still recovering in The Alfred hospital - almost two weeks after she was hit in a car park on Maling Road, Canterbury, about 7.15pm on March 7.

RACV manager of automotive services Guy Hummerston said the RACV member was injured when a tow-truck operator, contracted to RACV, responded to a request for service.

It is understood the woman was struck as she watched the tow-truck driver move her vehicle before loading it on to the truck.

"The tow truck driver immediately attended to the member and emergency services were called," Mr Hummerston said.

"RACV has been in contact with the member's family to offer assistance and express our concern for her welfare."

Police and ambulance services attended the scene and the woman was transported to hospital for treatment.

Mr Hummerston said RACV will work with relevant authorities, and the contractor, to identify all contributory factors to this “serious incident”.

WorkSafe Victoria spokeswoman Rosanna Bonaccurso said a team of investigators was investigating the matter.
