THIS happy trio took a break from showing the intricacies of Korean cooking to their classmates yesterday to share a laugh as they celebrated Harmony Day.

Sunnybank State School celebrated its seventh annual Harmony Day yesterday and has had a day dedicated to celebrating the school's multiculturalism for 20 years.

Year 3 student Sienna Bae, 9, and Year 2 students Agnes Son, 8, and Miso Kim, 7, celebrated their South Korean backgrounds by preparing a Korean feast for their classmates.

Harmony Day co-ordinator Ros Harcla said the school's 300 students hailed from more than 30 different cultural backgrounds.

"We have a good representation of Asian countries and also children from El Salvador, Pakistan, Iran, Africa and Aboriginal students - it is quite a variety," Mrs Harcla said.

Yesterday the children dressed in their national costumes for a group parade before taking part in activities including Bollywood dancing, Japanese fan dance troupes and cooking Finnish pancakes to mark Harmony Day which is officially held on March 21.

Mrs Harcla said the children embraced the values of Harmony Day year round and the school actively reinforced the message.

"We have 'Harmony' in our behaviour philosophy. We have such a diversity of cultures in our school we focus on this day to share those cultures but it's a reminder for every day about respecting others and their cultures and being a friend to everyone in our school," she said.

The theme for this year's Harmony Day was Many Stories - One Australia.
