IT was a simple photograph of tourists taking a leak on a freeway. But it has caused a furore in China and ignited a debate about how tourists should behave when visiting other countries.
The photographs were posted on Weibo and Chinese website China Smack. In the comment section Chinese residents have called for the men to be punished.
According to China Smack the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau Traffic Police Corps Elevated Freeway Detachment have tracked down the bus and launched an investigation into this incident.
Still that hasn't quelled the anger of the Chinese. Many commentators said the photographs were proof that the Chinese had an undeserved poor reputation overseas.
"Foreign countries often report on the low/poor characters of Chinese tourists overseas, but the characters of foreign tourists in China are not much better. On the internet, you can also see the ugly behaviour of foreign tourists with low characters, such as peeing and littering on our Great Wall."
Not all of the comments have been so civil, however. Many posted comments similar to this one: "The bus driver should be severely punished, and the 6 tools involved in the crime should also be confiscated."
Regardless of who the men are or why they needed to pee, the photographs do show that tourists should remember to be respectful when travelling through other countries. You never know who is watching - or photographing.
