THE trophy surf lifesaver Matthew Barclay most wanted - the Australian Under 15 Ironman title - has been named in his honour.

Matthew, a cadet member of the Maroochydore club, died while competing at last year's national championships at Kurrawa.

His death at just 14 prompted a series of safety improvements, including shifting the carnival to more protected North Kirra beach.

The Matthew Barclay Memorial Trophy for the Under 15 Ironman will join the Robert Gatenby Memorial Under 19 Surf Boat and Saxon Bird Memorial Under 19 Ironman. All three died during races - Robert in 1996 and Saxon in 2010.

Surf Life Saving Queensland has joined the tribute, adding Matthew's name to the State Under 15 Ironman trophy, to be decided at Mooloolaba this weekend.

His parents Steve and Donna will attend both the State and Australian titles.

"It's a big honour to have a trophy named after you, but sad as this was the event Matt most wanted to win," Mr Barclay said.
