ROCKS the size of basketballs were deliberately scattered along major roads and struck by cars in Melbourne's west overnight.
At least three cars have been damaged after boulders were placed along roads in Sunshine, Sunshine North and Braybrook.
Sunshine Police have labelled the act as "deliberate" and are stunned none of the passing motorists were injured by the "plain stupidity" of the unknown perpetrators.
A small hatch had its undercarriage ripped out upon impact when it became the first vehicle to run into the boulders on Duke St, near Burke St in Sunshine North about 1.40am.
The car was towed from the scene and MFB crews attended the scene to rid the road of oil.
Just 20 minutes later a taxi was struck by a rock believed to be thrown from a passing vehicle near Ballarat Rd and Ashley St in Braybrook.
Another car also had its tyre and alloy rim shredded when it ploughed through another rock at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Duke St in Sunshine about 2.45am.
Sunshine Police Sergeant Darren Anderson said it was starting that none of the drivers had been injured by the low acts.
"We are just so lucky no one has been injured overnight," Sgt Anderson said.
"The potential for there to be a tragedy, because of the recklessness or just plain stupidity of those who may be doing this for kicks, is very real.
"We believe this is deliberate and are appealing for anyone with information to give us a ring.
"If your friends or mates are bragging about what they are doing, think twice and do the right thing, give us a call."
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
