DON'T panic if you saw a Qantas plane flying over Sydney's CBD today. It wasn't a terrorist attack.

The flyover at 2100 feet was organised by Qantas as a tribute to former Qantas boss James Strong.

It was quite a sight to witness the superjumbo flying low between the skyscrapers.

"As a tribute to James Strong, a Qantas A380 aircraft will perform a flyover at 1pm. The A380 will fly north-to-south along George Street," Qantas tweeted just after 11.30am today.

Mr Strong died last week in Sydney from complications following surgery.

He earned the nickname "Mr Bow Tie" for his sartorial elegance and preference in neckwear ran Qantas between 1993 and 2001. In a varied career he also chaired Insurance Australia Group, Rip Curl Group and the board of Woolworths. He was a director of Dorna Sports, which manages MotoGP worldwide.

A spokesperson for Qantas said the plane did not have any passengers on board. The best place to view the plane was from Angel Place near Wynyard, where a crowd of Qantas employees gathered, including former CEO Geoff Dixon.

As the plane flew over George Street the employees clapped. Pedestrians on the other side of the street stopped and stared into the sky in disbelief before going about their business again.

However, further down George Street it was almost a case of blink and you'll miss it. The plan flew overhead about two minutes early, with some disappointed Qantas staff missing the flyover completely.
