A LEARJET with eight people aboard which suffered landing gear problems has landed safely in the US.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory says the Learjet 45 landed "without incident" at 1.32pm local time (6.32am AEDT) at Lambert-St Louis International Airport.

St. Louis airport spokesman Jeff Lea says airport officials are helping the passengers get off the airfield. Mr Lea says the plane is sitting on the runway with fire crews standing by.

The flight was diverted to St. Louis from St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia, Illinois, after departing Wooster, Ohio, earlier in the day. The FAA says the aircraft had no nose gear collapse.

The plane is registered to Aerometro LLC of Houston, Texas.

Cahokia is 8km south of St. Louis.
