A BIG ship by any other name is just, well, a big ship.

So with construction of four of those already underway in a dockyard in China, mining magnate Professor Clive Palmer thought he'd call the fifth one Titanic II.

And so the 58-year-old businessman last night officially launched his project in London to make an exact replica of the doomed cruise liner, albeit this time with a sat nav and a few extra life boats.

Palmer yesterday took on the cynical Fleet Street press in London, dismissing suggestions as ''bull...t'' that his plans to build a replica of the 1912 ship and doomed voyage from Southampton to New York was some kind of publicity stunt.

''We're building four ships now bigger than the Titanic at the shipyard,'' he said.

''I'm not somebody with no money. I've got enough money to build the Titanic ten times over if I wanted. So, there's no need for publicity. I'm trying to avoid the media if I can.''

Palmer launched his Titanic II construction campaign in style with a sumptuous 11-course dinner for 500 hand selected guests at London's Natural History Museum attended by no less than six former European prime ministers as guests with former National Party leader Larry Anthony as MC.

Guests, including former Howard Minister Richard Alston, were asked to attend in formal and coat and tails with paid extras dressed as cruise line stewards to entertain and direct the guests who congo lined well into the night. Glen Shorrock, former front man from Little River Band, was guest act and provided the music with all his band’s from Reminiscing to Lonesome Loser.

Prof Palmer spoke briefly to officially launch his endeavour with the Titanic replica to be built in China and ready for its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 2016.
