THE Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun's excellence in journalism was recognised last night as the papers took out eight categories at the prestigious Quill Awards.
Police reporters Anthony Dowsley and Wayne Flower led the way, winning the Quill for Best Coverage of an Issue or Event for their reporting on the disappearance of Jill Meagher and the subsequent homicide investigation.
For the second year in a row Amelia Harris won the RACV Transport Quill, for her exclusive report revealing that 650 truck drivers had been given fake driving certificates by an allegedly corrupt tester.
Ruth Lamperd won the Quill for Best Feature in Print for her extraordinary story following the progress of baby Faith, who was born addicted to drugs.
Patrick Carlyon won the Quill for Best Sports Feature In Any Medium for his read on Liam Jurrah.
Alex Coppel won the Quill for Best Sports Photo for his image of jockey Glen Boss celebrating his Cox Plate win, and George Salpigtidis won the Quill for Best Features Photo for his image of airborne soccer stars.A Herald Sun team - Finn Bradshaw, Alistair Paton, Sam Landsberger and Gilbert Gardiner - won the Quill for Best use of the Digital or Online Medium for SuperFooty.
"These awards reflect our commitment to quality journalism and covering breaking news," Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston said.
"It confirms the Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun's reputations as Victoria's leading agenda-setting newspapers."
The Gold Quill went to Sarah Ferguson and Deb Masters from the ABC's Four Corners for their report on a people smuggling network.
