JUNK mail deliverer Steven Fennell has been arrested over the death of Macleay Island grandmother Liselotte Watson.

Detectives went to Mr Fennell's island home this morning and then escorted him by boat to the mainland, where it is expected he will be charged.

At 11am, Detective Acting Superintendent Don Mabbutt confirmed there had been an arrest.

"I can tell you that a 53-year-old Macleay Island resident is in police custody at the moment in relation to investigations into a murder on Macleay Island in November," he said.

"Detectives will be dealing with him.

"He was arrested on Macleay Island."

Patrons from a cafe overlooking the Weinam Creek boat ramp gathered to watch the boat from Macleay Island as it pulled into shore. Detectives then walked Fennell from the boat to a waiting car.

Det Supt Mabbutt said the community had been incredibly supportive throughout the investigation.

"If it wasn't for the community on Macleay Island, we wouldn't be at this stage in the investigation," he said.

"So I'd really like to thank them for that."

Mrs Watson, 85, was found dead in her bedroom on November 13.

Mr Fennell, who described himself as a friend who would do odd jobs for the elderly widow, raised the alarm at the time, telling police he was concerned that she had not answered the door.

A shaving bag containing Mrs Watson's bank documents was found washed up on a Macleay Island beach the week before her murder.

Police divers were sent out following her death to search the area, discovering a hammer they believe had been thrown into the water.

Acting Detective Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said in November that other items could have been thrown into the water after Mrs Watson's death.

"It would appear whoever is responsible for this may have visited a number of times and deposited these items from the murder scene on a couple of occasions," he said.
