A FEMALE passenger was removed from a British Airways flight at Ben Gurion airport in Israel after she smuggled a dog onto the flight.

The Yorkshire Terrier was discovered only after the passenger seated next to her heard a squeak coming from a bag under the seat.

British Airways staff questioned the woman and then removed her, her dog and her luggage from the London-bound plane.

A British Airways spokesperson said: "We did not allow a female customer to travel on board our service from Tel Aviv to Heathrow today after it was discovered, shortly after boarding, that she was carrying a small dog in her handbag.

"We apologise to our customers who experienced a delay to the departure of their flight as a result of this incident."

The incident has highlighted security issues at what has been assumed to be one of the world's safest airports.

The woman would have passed through all the relevant security and immigration points at Tel Aviv.

"People are concerned about the security implications. How on earth did she manage to get a dog through security at Ben Gurion?," one passenger told the BBC.
