Fire alarm sparks flight delays

FLIGHTS were delayed this morning after smoke was discovered in a computer room at Melbourne Airport.

Air traffic controllers were evacuated after the smoke was seen at the airport's control centre.

A spokesman for Airservices Australia said the air traffic control tower at Melbourne Airport was not affected.

“For safety reasons, aircraft in our southern flight information region were temporarily held on the ground at all ports,” the spokesperson said.

“Airborne aircraft were controlled and managed normally for a landing and air traffic control tower services continued to be provided at all airports around the country.”

Firefighters at the airport attended the incident and no one was injured.

The spokesman said the control centre resumed operations at 7.15am and flights began to depart Melbourne.

“As a result of this incident some delays are expected to occur throughout the morning to most flights in the network,” the spokesman said.

“Airservices apologises for the delays and is working closely with the airlines to resume normal scheduling as soon as possible.

Virgin passenger Danielle Barclay said her 8am flight from Melbourne to Sydney had been delayed by an hour-and-a-half.

“It’s very frustrating to say the least, especially with limited updates coming through,” Ms Barclay said.
